Rains swamp businesses big and small (Houston Chronicle)

Monday’s relentless downpour could cost local businesses hundreds of millions in lost sales and repairs.

Grocery stores, restaurants and retail centers closed their doors for the day. Chevron, BP and other big oil companies told their engineers and geologists to stay home. Cargo ships all but stopped moving in and out of the Port of Houston for much of the day, and airlines canceled dozens of flights. Hourly workers lost a day’s pay and contractors lost a day’s work.
