Turner’s win has echoes of 1997 (Houston Chronicle)

Sylvester Turner’s narrow win over conservative Bill King last Saturday largely echoes the vote breakdown in the 1997 election that saw Lee Brown defeat Republican Rob Mosbacher by some 10,000 votes to become Houston’s first black mayor.

However, Turner significantly outperformed Brown among Hispanic voters, suggesting a continued trend of increased Latino support for black candidates.
