Fort Bend County aims to deploy new text-to-911 system by end of year (Fort Bend Star)

In serious emergencies, picking up the phone to dial 9-1-1 may not be realistic. If an intruder invades a home or school, a phone call for help could give away your presence. But if you can’t call, what do you do?

By the end of the year, Harris text and Fort Bend Counties will be providing a Text-to-9-1-1 alternative for emergencies. Following an agreement made on May 15, the four major cell phone carriers – AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon – agreed with the Federal Communications Commission to make texting 911 to dispatchers available.
